The main difference between conventional heat fusion and electrofusion is the method by which the heat is applied. ELECTROFUSION is a simple method of joining pipes in circumstances where butt fusion is not practicable, incorporating an electrical fitting which melts the plastic of both the fitting and the pipe, causing them to fuse together.

Electrofusion Procedure

We are going to demonstrate how to adequately prepare and joint a polyethylene electrofusion fitting and pipe.

WHAT DO WE NEED?

  1. Electrofusion Unit
  2. Pipe alignment
  3. Bar code scanner
  4. Scraping tool
  5. Pipe cutter
  6. Alcohol
  7. Cloth
  8. Marker
  9. Pipe
  10. Electrofusion fitting

POWER REQUIREMENTS

Before we start, we have to make sure to have a GENERATOR with a reliable source of AC power for the Electrofusion Processor to work properly in supplying the fitting with the right amount of energy.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COLD WEATHER INSTALLATIONS: Cold weather affects both fittings and equipment. Electrofusion fittings require more energy at the beginning of the fusion cycle.

PREPARATION AND CLEANING

Pipe preparation and contamination are very important considerations in the electrofusion process. Careful attention must be given to proper scraping and cleaning procedures.

  1. CONECT THE ELECTROFUSION TO THE RIGH POWER SOURCE (DON’T TURN ON YET)
  2. SELECT TOOLS, PIPE AND FITTING

Make sure to set the alignment in the right position and be ready to align the pipe with the right clamp.

Now select the pipe and the fitting that you are going to weld.

  • SCRAPING: For a pipe surface to be properly prepared for electrofusion the outer layer or “skin” of the pipe should be removed to expose a clean, virgin pipe material with the scraper. Mark the area with a non-greasy and non-wax marker (to avoid contamination of the pipe) from the pipe end that is 1/2 the total length of the coupler. This mark is for stab depth purposes and will ensure that the pipe end is inserted to the center of the coupler

It is very important to note that abrasive materials, should never be used in place of a scraping tool. Clean with a minimum 70% isopropyl alcohol concentration with a clean cloth, with no additional additives, the pipe and the fitting.

INSERT: Insert the pipe inside the fitting.

ALIGMENT: Place the pipe with the fitting on the area to be fused. Ensure that the pen mark in the pipe is visible.

TURN THE MACHINE ON

CONEXIONS: Attach the plug cables to the electrofusion fitting.

PRESS ENTER AND PRESS START TO START THE PROCESS

WAIT UNTIL THE INDICATERS SHOW THE FINISH PROCESS
